Playing in the dirt to fight Childhood Obesity
Designated Fund: HEAL SLO
To address the alarming rise in childhood obesity in our county, the Community Foundation brought dozens of interested parties together in a county-wide conference and gave more than $50,000 in grants this year to support the innovative efforts being made to give children a healthier chance at life. The Barrel Garden project, for example, combined playing in the dirt with growing beautiful food, and was a big hit with the pre-school set. Link to full story.

Scholarship Fund: The Kelly Mcadams Memorial Scholarship
When Ben and Pat McAdams lost their daughter Kelly to lung cancer when she was just 42, they wanted to find a way to honor her life and to keep her legacy alive. Last year, the first recipient of the Kelly McAdams Memorial Scholarship began his education at Cal Poly as a Civil Engineering student. Re-imagining the Future … with a report on the Transfer of Wealth
In February of this year, the results of a study on the transfer of wealth to future generations in our county were revealed. The study found that San Luis Obispo County’s transfer of wealth to the next generations over the next 50 years could be as much as $62 billion. Commissioned by the Community Foundation, this report sparked a different way to think about giving. “Many of our clients think first of their families as the beneficiaries of their estates,” said Rob Garcia, of Rob Garcia Wealth Management. “This study illustrated for me what a tremendous impact we can have if everyone were to leave just 5% of their estate to the community.
