Our Mission

The San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation is a public trust established to assist donors in building an enduring source of charitable funds to meet the changing needs and interests of the community.

Our Vision

As residents of San Luis Obispo County, we are a thriving, engaged society that is responsible for ourselves and for one another, for our diverse communities, and for maintaining the beauty, productivity, and sustainability of our environment.

General Grants Program

The Community Foundation’s general grants program is funded solely by local donors who have contributed to the Foundation’s Community Endowment and various Field of Interest funds. The general grants program is made possible through the generous support of the Roberta D. Petrie Memorial Endowment; Amy Arsenio Endowment; Alva, Ernest, and William Righetti Fund for Seniors and People with Disabilities; Alfred & Diane Fritz Endowment, Helen & Ronald Dunin Memorial Endowment, Preventive Health Care Endowment and the Community Endowment.

Our goal is to distribute these funds to a variety of non-profit organizations throughout San Luis Obispo County. The grant review committee is comprised of community volunteers and Foundation Board members to assure a proper evaluation is made of all grant requests. Organizations that conduct the majority of their public charitable operations in San Luis Obispo County are eligible to apply.

The San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation makes grants to support programs that provide significant benefits to the community within and across these funding areas:

Arts & Culture - supporting appreciation of new and traditional forms of visual and performing arts through education and experiencing the diverse world of arts;

Education - supporting programs which enhance learning and impact knowledge, skills and attitudes;

Health - improving the quality of life through preventive health and overcoming barriers to physical health and mental health care;

Human Services - improving the quality of life through providing for basic needs and social service programs, addressing the needs of seniors and people with disabilities, programs supporting people attempting to help themselves;

Community Enhancement - providing an enduring impact through the environmental, historical, and civic aspects of community life.

In addition to the General Grants Program, the Community Foundation focuses on strategic investments for addressing unmet or emerging community needs.
